Adding an approximate 30,000 square feet to the building, it will balloon to 116,000 square feet once the renovations are done around mid-2014. Spokesperson Felicia Fefer explains that in addition to keeping the departments the store currently has, “fresh” departments will be added, like produce, more dairy, and a deli section.
“It’s true one-stop shopping,” she argues. “Supercentres are a favourite format in Canada. I think it just makes sense. It’s really what our customers are looking for.”
Walmart, which opened in Fort St. John in 2002, will remain opening during construction.
“We try to be minimally disruptive,” says Fefer. “We’ll move departments, but we never close down. It’s important to be able to provide access to shopping for our customers who trust us to have the items that they want.”
Walmart expects both the construction and completed expansion to create jobs in the community.
