According to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, hemodialysis used to treat most cases costs around $60,000 a year. However, the one-time cost of a kidney transplant is $23,000 plus $6,000 a year for medical treatment, meaning a patient could save almost $250,000 over a five-year period if they find a donor.

FortSt. John’s Kidney Walk will take place this Sunday, November 10 after the original date in September was rescheduled. Registration starts at the Pomeroy Sport Centre at 10 a.m. with the walk itself beginning at 11 a.m. People can join in on the walk the day of without collecting pledges. The event is about raising awareness of the disease, and showing support to our neighbours with it.
