Dr. Jan Klompje left to go back to South Africa due to family reasons, leaving Fort St. John with only one general surgeon.

Vice President of Medicine, Dr. Ronald Chapman says Northern Health had three surgeons who were interested in the position, but in the end decided not to pursue the position within FortSt. John.

Chapman says there is another hopeful, who is due to see what “its like up here.”

Chapman also says, they are trying to make everybody aware of the opportunity, this includes posting the position on the Northern Health website, health match B.C as well as a comic about the position in South Africa to promote it.

He says it’s anyone’s guess how long it will take to find a replacement, but they are hoping it will be soon.

Currently the waitlist is over 300 patients, and now with the loss of Dr. Klompje wait times are expected to be understandably longer.

This will also result in having more occasions with no General Surgeons on call in the community and the region.
