Conservative Government Improves Gas Tax Fund for BC Municipalities

The renewed federal Gas Tax Fund provides local governments with the flexibility to choose and plan infrastructure projects based on their priorities and provides them with flexibility to support local infrastructure.

“This announcement is an important day for communities across B.C., especially in the north”, Prince George-Peace River MP, Bob Zimmer said. “We have given more freedom to rapidly growing municipalities in northeastern B.C. to use the Gas Tax Fund to improve their communities.”

The conservatives say, since 2006, “significant improvements have bee made to the Gas Tax Fund; it has been extended, doubled, indexed and made permanent.”

The report goes on to say, “by ensuring these commitments in legislation, provinces, territories and local governments are assured of an ongoing funding stream to address community infrastructure needs and priorities.”

The renewed agreements will govern the flow of federal funds to each province and territory over the next 10 years, from 2014 – 15 until 2023 – 24.
