B.C. government partners with B.C. Transplant to save lives

In a written statement, The Ministry of Health says the districts of Dawson Creek, Quesnel, Port Alberni and Salmon Arm will be home to the development of new opportunities within Service B.C. offices in an effort to help potential donors make an educated decision as to whether or not they’d like to participate.

“Participating centres have friendly staff on hand to provide information about organ donation, answer questions about the registration process and to assist citizens to confirm their intentions with B.C. Transplant by registering online as a donor,” a written statement from the ministry reads.

Minister of Health, Terry Lake adds, “With so many British Columbians waiting for a transplant it’s great to be able to use government resources in creative ways to help increase the number of potential donors in B.C.”

Close to 500 British Columbians are currently waiting for a life-saving transplant, while nearly 400 of the people on the list are waiting for a kidney, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health.

“More than 95 per cent of British Columbians support organ donation but only 19 per cent have registered,” the statement from the ministry reads. “With close to 500 citizens on the transplant waiting list, signing up to become an organ donor could help save lives – possibly the life of a neighbour, co-worker, friend or family member in need.”

The ministry goes on to say that one single donor can save up to eight lives.

B.C. Transplant is an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority and is responsible for providing provincial oversight for all organ donation and transplantation activities in B.C.
