Icebreaker exhibition games a learning experience for Trackers

The team took on Grande Prairie, Whitecourt, Prince George and Peace River. In the first game the Trackers lost to Grande Prairie 3-0. Discipline plagued the Trackers in their next game as they played Whitecourt. They lost 6-1 in a game where the team was experimenting with different players and didn’t field as strong of a team on the ice as they did against Grande Prairie.

In the Trackers third game against Prince George the team put forth a good effort and came away with a 2-2 tie against the tier one midget team. The team battled through some minor injuries in their final game and were playing with a thin line up against Peace River which resulted in a 6-1 loss.

Coach Shawn Brinsky said the team uses the opening stages of the season to get the players acquainted with each other as there isn’t a lot of continuity as there is in other cities.

“The one thing that we see with our program because our kids come from all over the region to play on this team the first month of hockey is getting to know each other and getting to understand our system and getting our players to understand and predict what their linemates will do,” he said.

Brinsky added that the team will be meeting to discuss what direction they want to take for the upcoming season.

“Tonight and tomorrow morning I’ll sit down with some of the evaluators and other team officials to see where we’re going. We definitely need to make some decisions regarding the rosters. After Tuesday’s practice there will be player meetings and decisions on commitments and released will be made. We want to be in a situation where we move into our first league game against Slave Lake that we’re moving forward with our established roster,” he explained.

The Trackers will open the regular season on Saturday as they’ll be in Slave Lake for two games over the weekend.
