The legislation is said to “create protections for law-abiding firearm owners and eliminate needless paperwork.”
“This legislation is a good first step to address the concerns of firearms owners in Canada”, MP Zimmer said. “The law as it was written by Paul Martin’s Liberal Government assumes that all gun owners are dangerous. We want to ensure that all Canadians are safe, but that they are also treated fairly by the law.”
The legislation will protect owners who were targeted last February when the RCMP reclassified the Swiss Arms Classic Green and other similar rifles, by putting the final decision in the hands of an elected government rather than bureaucrats, according to MP Zimmer.
Bill C-42 also proposes a reduction in the enormous amount of paperwork firearms owners deal with by reducing excess paperwork in licensing and transporting firearms by making some of the requirements a condition of license, and will combine the Possession Only License and Possession Acquisition License into a single license.
“Just as we shut down the wasteful long-gun registry, Bill C-42 will cut red tape and make it simpler for law-abiding citizens keep their firearms without fear of arbitrary decisions making them criminals,” Zimmer concluded.
