Council approves funding to establish business plan for possible creation of medical clinic

Sole sourcing refers to not considering other bids, but awarding responsibility to the consultation firm from which the idea was originally proposed. MNP will now conduct the investigation, create a report outlining their findings and recommendations, and later share that information with the Long Term Healthcare Solution Committee.

One of the main reasons physician recruitment and retention is said to be such a challenge for Fort St. John is issues surrounding overhead and cost of operation for a family practice. The challenges along with the Physician Compensation model has led to a public clinic being proposed.

A public clinic would provide for a fully staffed medical office where physicians can work using a salary compensation model. Under this system the physician would not be required to run the facility as a business, unlike the current clinics in Fort St. John, with the exception of the unattached medical clinic.

To determine if a public clinic is viable, it will need to become clear why overhead in physician owned practices is high and if a public model would be sustainable.

The Long Term Health Care Solutions Committee is comprised of many stakeholders, including but not limited to the City of Fort St. John, Northern Health, the PRRD, Division of Family Practises, MLA Pat Pimm, and the District of Taylor to name a few.
