“The Dawson Creek Curling Rink has been testing at zero ammonia since the brine was neutralized last week… the Memorial Arena, however, has now had two successive ammonia positive test of increasing severity, showing there is definitely a  leak in the Memorial Arena chiller,” a press release from the City of Dawson Creek reads.

As a result of the ongoing ammonia detection, council is looking into the details surrounding a transition to the Encana Event Centre, and is discussing options with arena users tonight.

“Through this entire process, the safety of the public has been the first priority and will continue to be,” the city goes on to write. “Council has authorized a significant extra expense for 2015 to take advantage of the availability of an alternative at Encana, and provide the bet possible ice availability for hockey, speed skating, figure skating, and public skating.”

Moving forward, council is hiring a “certified contractor” to drain and remove ammonia inside the chiller.

“Once the ammonia is gone, the brine will again be neutralized,” the release goes on to read. “A contractor will then complete the necessary investigation on the compressor, condenser, brine lines and pad condition, as well as the chiller to determine the cause of the leak, and advise of the necessary repairs/replacements.”

Following tonight’s meeting with arena users, council will make decisions about “what expenditures are rational going forward.”

The Dawson Creek Curling Rink is expected to reopen on Thursday December 4, subject to B.C. Safety Authority approval.
