Dicaire not pleased with Flyers inconsistency in loss to Rangers

Head coach Gerard Dicaire was left frustrated and confused given the team can go into Spirit River and win with 11 skaters, but play terribly on home ice with a full bench.

“The only good player on the ice was our goalie,” he said. “He kept us in that game. Right from the start we were sluggish. We always seem to be like that when we have four lines. They can’t figure out how to play hockey. They go brain dead.”

The powerplay in particular really struck a nerve with the bench boss. A lengthy five on three early in the first period produced no scoring chances and a number of powerplays after were sloppy looking as well in a game that was close until the final minutes of the third.

“Guys have zero urgency out there. Our top line of Horst, Shipton, and Fast were absolutely terrible on the powerplay. They didn’t want the puck,” Dicaire explained. “To be on the powerplay you’ve got to work harder than the other team and you’ve got to want the puck and they just didn’t want it. We ended up throwing Bruha, Sheps [Schepers], and Giroux our there. I told them between periods I can only control so much. You’ve got to go out and do stuff on your own. You’re grown men, hold yourselves accountable. Why do I have to babysit you all the time? I do take some responsibility but they’ve got to do it too.”

Scoring the Flyers lone goal on the night was Tyler Loney. Assists went to Jeff Fast and Adam Horst.

Despite allowing four goals, Jared Andersen was solid in goal and prevented the outcome from being worse than it was with many big stops throughout the contest. He made 26 saves overall in the game.

Next up for the Flyers is a road game in Grande Prairie on Thursday night. That’s followed by a home game against Falher next Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
