Discovering the Peace Country with Fort St. John’s Winter Scavenger Hunt

“It’s a much shorter timeframe for one thing,” explains recreation programmer Sonya Wiebe. “It will be running for six weeks, and each week we’re going to release one photo description that the public needs to capture. So that’s different to last year; they needed to collect 30 over a two and a half month timeframe.”

Somewhat new this year is also the change in season – the second time it’s become a winter hunt instead of summer.

Weibe explains the purpose of the Visitors Centre’s initiative is to relish the unique beauty of Fort St. John.

“Sometimes people think you need to go out-of-town to be a visitor,” says Weibe. “Well you know, even in our own town we can get out-and-about and enjoy the things that we have in our own backyard.”

Here’s how the competition works.

Every Monday morning beginning February 2, 2015, the city will release a photo description on their website and Facebook page. The first 10 photos received each week will be twice entered into the weekly draw, while the other photos received by the end of each week – deadline Friday 10 a.m. – will be entered once into the weekly draw.

Each of the weekly winners will receive a prize pack, and will also be entered into the grand prize draw for a weekend package of skiing at Powder King.

“You don’t have to collect all six [photos],” Weibe goes on to say. “It just gives you better chances for prizes if you’re in it every week.”

The grand prize package includes a two-night stay in a Mackenzie hotel and a 3-day skiing pass, which includes lift tickets and rentals.

The photo description will also be announced at 8:40 a.m. on Moose FM and 30 minutes earlier on the Moose FM app.

Registration opens January 26, 2015 at the Visitors Centre and will remain open throughout the six weeks.
