The boys and girls rugby squads from North Peace Secondary School came away with wins in their respective third place games to close out the season. The boys defeated St. Joseph’s 15-5, and the girls defeated a joint team of Grande Prairie Composite and Sexsmith 5-0.
Boys coach Clayton Woodruff admitted he was pleasantly surprised to come away with a victory considering the team didn’t have its full complement of players either because of injury or prior commitments.
“I was actually surprised that we pulled it off honestly,” he said. We were missing out stand off and our inside centre. We had to shuffle a whole bunch of people around. We had to move some forwards into the back line to make the team work so we had a bunch of guys in new places.”
The St. Joseph’s team came into the game with only 13 players so Woodruff lent two bodies from NPSS to even things up at 15 a side. The teams played the game without subs on either side as a result.
