Organizers of the Fort St. John Relay For Life are facing a hefty bill if they’re unable to locate a pair of generators they say were stolen from the group over the weekend.
Organizer Brenda Baumeister said two red and black 3000-watt Honda Inverter generators were stolen from the back of trailer sometime between noon on June 14 and the morning of June 15, as crews were cleaning up and tearing down the event.
“Somebody… just decided they needed generators,” Baumeister said.
“Which is sad because it is from a non-profit and we have to pay them back.”
The Relay For Life event was held at Dr. Kearney Middle School on June 14, and organizers had rented the generators from Peace Country Rentals for the event.
But they could now be on the hook for some $5,000 if they can’t find them, money that will have to be taken from the pot of $50,000 raised at the event for the Canadian Cancer Society.
“That’s $5,000 from money that we raised. People don’t think of that unfortunately,” said Baumeister, who has called local pawn shops in her search to get the generators back.
“We’re in the process of figuring how we want to proceed.”
Baumeister has filed a report with police.
Anyone with information is asked to call RCMP at 250-787-8100.
