Non-profits to receive donations from hotel company

A trio of local non-profit groups in Fort St. John will each receive a cheque from the city’s newest hotel.

MasterBuilt Hotels, which opened the Microtel Inn & Suites earlier this month, has announced the Association of Community Living has the grand winner of $5,000 from its Common Ground contest.

The company had initially opened its planned donation to a community vote, which also included the North Peace SPCA and the Kidsport.

The company says those two organizations will each receive $2,500.

The company is making the donations as part of its Common Ground program, which says is a way to say “Thank You” to the city in welcoming the opening of the Mictrotel.

The company has made similar donations to groups in nine other Canadian cities where it has built a Microtel, including Blackfalds, Red Deer, and Whitecourt in Alberta. The funds have gone to support hospitals and food banks in the past.

MasterBuilt will present a cheque at a grand opening ceremony June 18. The hotel opened to travellers earlier this month.
