Gymnastics area of rec centre most affected in fire

Thirteen firefighters attended yesterday’s blaze at the rec centre on 96th Avenue. The call came in around 4:30 after there was a report of smoke in the gymnastics gymnasium and crews were on scene until midnight.

Captain Dan Golob of the Fort St. John Fire Department said the arena and pool made it out relatively unscathed, however the same could not be said unfortunately for the gymnastics section.

“The facility right now all three buildings are shut down. The North Peace Arena and the pool just had light smoke in the incident. The gymnastics gym had the heavy fire loss,” Golob said.

Currently a crew is still on site to deal with hot spots relating to the magnitude of the fire.

The cause is still under investigation by fire prevention officers.

There were no injuries to the public or first responders.
