After last weekend’s fire that ruined the gymnastics area of the North Peace Arena, organizers with the North Peace Gymnastics Association are now in need of a temporary space to operate if activities are going to continue. Currently the association is in a holding pattern given the fire and that they don’t have an alternate space to use.
According to Richelle Gauvin of North Peace Gymnastics not only is the club in a bind, but so are families as many counted on the facility for summer child care.
“Most people aren’t aware how many people use our facility,” she said. We have just over 900 members that use our facility. We are one of the only recreation facilities in town that offer services 12 months of the year. September to June we offer recreational classes and competitive classes, but this year we were full capacity for summer camps and that’s for all age groups. This summer we’ve left many families in a desperate situation because a lot of it was child care.”
It’s unknown at this point whether the current facility will be rebuilt or repaired and what the time frame would be for such work.
If there is one bit of good news to come out of the fire it’s that the equipment the association used was insured, and they are currently working with their adjusters. The majority of the equipment comes out of Ontario and will be ordered when the time comes.
