The Fort St. John Killbillies will be putting the finishing touches on their season tomorrow evening. The team will be in Quesnel for a game against the Gold Pain, a team the Killbillies have handled rather easily in their past few encounters.
Despite that, coach Ashley Large isn’t taking anything for granted especially as the local derby girls will be fielding a younger line-up than usual.
“This game we’re going with a little bit of a different team. Several of our key players are not able to make the trip, but we’re lucky enough to have several filling in the roster spots. We’ve got three new girls heading down to Quesnel. This will be their first full game with our team.”
The roster changes will force Large to tweak what he does in coaching the team a bit, as he wants to make sure the new derby girls have a positive experience in their first game on the track.
“The biggest thing for me will be to try to coach actively more some of the newer skaters. The last couple of games because it’s been the same roster over and over I’ve been able to move more into a general strategy for the whole group and focus less on individuals and what individuals bring to the game. Your first roller derby game playing with a team that’s been playing for several years can be intimidating. I want to make sure that those girls ultimately have a really good time and feel like they’re a part of the team.”
In their previous outing the Killbillies got a big win over Grande Prairie by a score of 116-85.
