Charlie Lake fire burns up abandoned house

The Charlie Lake Fire Department responded to a fire on Friday evening. It was across the highway from the Ministry of Mines office in Charlie Lake.  Part of the highway was down to single lane traffic in both directions while firefighters attended the fire.

Fire Chief Terry Truchan says the homeowner was dug a big pit for burning, close to an abandoned house full of old tires and other items.

The old house then caught fire, and expanded to the trees. When the department arrived, the house was fully engulfed.

Two vehicles and two propane tanks nearby were taken care of first to make sure the fire did spread and cause any more danger.

“The crews took care of the exposures really quickly and then we knocked down the fire fairly quickly,” said Truchan. “There were a lot of hot spots due to the fires, so we had to use foam to make sure that the fire did not continue to spread.”

No injuries were reported in the fire.
