Petition calls for mayor to scrap pilot project

Fort St. John’s Mayor Lori Ackerman received a petition supported letter from Shelly Walton of Airdrie, Alberta.

Walton wants the mayor to reconsider is the provincial government’s request to consider developing a pilot project, which would focus on the attraction, retention, and integration, of immigrant families to the city.

However, Ackerman says she has, “Not been contacted by the person who started the petition seeking clarification of the proposed project, so it is no surprise that it contains assumptions and incorrect information.”

She last reported signatures totaling more than half the target number of 5,000.

The initiative is aimed at attracting permanent residents to Northeast BC in an attempt to fill what has repeatedly been identified as a skilled labor shortage in the region.

Ackerman says, “The proposed project is being drafted to specific needs in this community, and people from Alberta may not be aware of those needs.”
