Following a “Secure and Hold” situation at North Peace Secondary School on Friday afternoon, the Fort St. John RCMP is reminding people that filing a complaint that leads to a police investigation, knowing that it is false, is a criminal offence.
Public Mischief is a criminal code offence that is punishable of up to five years in jail.
Sgt. Steve Perret says the Secure and Hold was put in place as a precautionary measure while police investigated the complaint, and no charges will be laid in this instance.
RCMP say the complaint was reported by a student, and the nearby Robert Oglivie Elementary School was put into a secure and hold as well – because the incident occurred near the end of the day.
Police quickly determined the complaint to be false, and the Secure and Hold was lifted as soon as police and school staff confirmed there was no risk to student safety.
