With the North Peace Hockey League season ready to begin tomorrow, the league has been dealt a tough blow prior to its start. Last year’s top team from the regular season and league finalist, the Grande Prairie Athletics will not be icing a team for the 2015-2016 year.

Things had been looking up for the NPHL with the return of the Dawson Creek Canucks and the High Prairie Regals bringing membership up at the time up to eight.

The announcement was made this afternoon on the team’s Facebook page stating: “We regret to inform everyone that the Grande Prairie Athletics have decided that they will be forced to take a years leave of absence from the NPHL this season. Unfortunately a bigger contingent of players have left/relocated or moved on.

All those involved are very disappointed this came to be but we fully expect to recover and be ready for next years NPHL season.

We will continue to provide updates on our hockey club and the direction we will be heading in the future.”

The Athletics had a record last season of 16-4-0-0. They lost in the NPHL finals to the Spirit River Rangers.
