A video of students at Ecole Central Elementary School has gained some attention online – over 5,000 views since it was posted on October 2nd.
The video, called ‘Change the World/Change du Monde’ shows students singing along to Rik Leaf – a performer who works with Tribe of One, a group that has created unique entertainment by combining aspects of indigenous culture since 1998.
Principal of Ecole Central Janet Haley said that it’s a tradition for students to do something community-oriented in September, but this year, the school wanted to do something different.
“We were focusing on the impact we can have on the world,” she said. “‘What are the impacts that the small actions you take everyday, what are the impacts of those?’ … We believe very strongly that good things come from inside individuals.”
Together, they created what Haley calls an ‘artifact’ that could be played and replayed again and again. The video was one project, along with a ‘school wall’ where students were invited to write personal messages.
She says it’s exciting for something local to be noticed by other people, who seem interested in what Tribe of One has created with the school.
“It’s great for us to be singled out and recognized for the work our students have done and our teachers have done. It’s also gratifying to add our voice to what is a social movement around kindness and social change.”
The video will have an official launch at the school’s open house this Wednesday night.
