The long-awaited portable to help accommodate student numbers at CM Finch Elementary will be operating and serving students soon –  but not a quick as some might have thought.

The Facilities Manager with the School District, Chad Cushway, said the portable itself is on school property, but there are final touches – such as building a causeway for students to walk.

“I wasn’t even sure we were going to have the portable set before November 1st, but we got lucky,” he said.

Cushway said during a School Board 60 Committee of the Whole meeting on Monday that around November 11th would be the earliest that it could possibly be up and operating for students to use.

But at this point in the development of the project, he does not see that goal being met realistically, as the City still have to examine and approve the building.

“Once we’re done with our general contractors, they’ll come by and take a peek at it,” he added.

The plans to bring a portable to the school are part of an effort to alleviate the pressure of the growing student population in Fort St. John – especially in the thriving northwestern neighbourhood of the city where CM Finch is the only elementary school currently.
