The B.C. government has distributed a $121,078.26 grant-in-lieu for municipal property taxes for Dawson Creek. Grants-in-lieu of property taxes are handed out every November to pay back municipalities for services that benefited government properties such as sewers, roads and fire protection.

In a release Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier said, “Our government recognizes the importance of compensating municipalities like Dawson Creek for local services that benefit government-owned properties,” Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier said. “This funding is an investment.”

Grants are issued in accordance with the Municipal Aid Act and are payable on land and improvements owned by the provincial government such as courthouses, provincial government office buildings and warehouses. Grants-in-lieu provide funding to local governments that can help pay for local services.

Payments are based on the municipality’s tax rate and the assessed property values from BC Assessment.
