Voters in three rural electoral areas have presented new challenges for the Peace River Regional District Board following two referendum “No Votes” last week on sewage and potable water service questions.

One question asked voters in electoral areas B and C if they were in favour of the Peace River Regional District adopting a Domestic Sewage Receiving Facility Service Establishment Bylaw, with a specified annual maximum tax requisition limit.

Only 12 per cent of the eligible voters cast ballots and 54.7 percent voted no.

The other question asked voters in electoral areas B, C and D if they were in favour of the PRRD board adopting a Potable Water Service Establishment Bylaw permitting the district to construct or upgrade potable water tank loader sites at various locations, again with a specified maximum annual tax requisition limit.

In this case, only 13 per cent of the eligible voters cast ballots and the result was even closer, with 52 per cent voting no.

PRRD Chair, Lori Ackerman, had no explanation for the no votes or the low voter turnout, but she did say this.

Now, speaking of moving forward she also said her understanding is that board should receive an administration report on alternatives in January, but at the moment she conceded.
