FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The two recipients of the Rotary Club’s biggest prizes in their Mega Lottery received them during a luncheon this afternoon.
Michelle Turnbull was the winner of the 50/50 prize. This year, the Mega Lottery sold a total of 10,157 tickets with an additional 5,579 tickets sold in the Fifty/Fifty draw.
Turnbull received $27,895, and the other $27,895 is going back to local participating clubs.
She recalls being out shopping when she got a text from a fellow Rotarian, telling her she had won the prize.
“It was pretty exciting, I was quite shocked.”
She bought eight tickets for the draw, as her son plays hockey and had tickets to sell. When they had leftover tickets, she bought the rest of them, not imagining she would end up winning a big prize.
Turnbull says she will be spending the money fixing her truck, and on a vacation — though her and her family will be waiting until the dollar isn’t so low before heading out on one.
“We’ve never really gone anywhere, our little guy certainly hasn’t, so I think we’re probably going to go to Disneyland or Disneyworld.”
The big prize winner was Angie Alde, who went home with $40,000.
“It was really amazing,” Alde told Energetic City “My friends phoned me, and I got the phone call a couple of days later.”
She says she split the money up with her daughters, all having bought three tickets each from the Rotary Club — totaling nine when all was said and done. Her portion of the winnings will be going towards a destination wedding in November.
