PEACE RIVER, A.B. — Peace River RCMP sent out an alert this afternoon, notifying the public of a prisoner who got away from the Peace River Correctional Facility.

A masked man, who was armed, another unknown person driving took 29-year-old Harley John Lay from custody at about 10 a.m. this morning. The armed man confronted two Peace River Correctional officers who were escorting Lay to Peace River Hospital for medical treatment.

Police say the officers did not resist the man’s demands.

The three men then took off in what is believed to be a beige Dodge minivan, with no license plate available. The van was last seen on 74 Street in Peace River, Alberta — possibly heading towards Highway 2.

Peace River RCMP advise the public to not approach Lay if he is seen. Instead, anyone with more information about his whereabouts, the vehicle or the two other men involved in this incident is asked to call Peace River RCMP at (780) 624-6677 or the local police department immediately.
