FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Though daytime highs in Fort St. John are still reaching into the mid-twenties, ice returning to the Pomeroy Sports Centre this week means that hockey season is just around the corner.

The Fort St. John Minor Hockey Association is currently taking player registrations for the upcoming 2016-2017 hockey season, and tryouts are also just around the corner. The NEBC/Yukon Trackers will be hosting their Evaluation and ID camp in Taylor beginning on August 26th at the Taylor & District Ice Center. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m., before a trio of three-hour on-ice sessions starting Friday evening and going throughout the weekend. The Bantam/Midget Female Tournament Team will also be hosting tryouts in conjunction with the Trackers camp in Taylor.

All players trying out for the Bantam rep teams will be hitting the ice on August 28th at 10:15 and 11:30 a.m. for mandatory body checking clinics. In addition to the second day of the clinic, the Pee Wee tryouts begin on the 29th at 5:00 and 6:15 p.m. After learning how to properly body check, prospective Bantam ‘A’ players will be taking to the ice for the first time on August 30th at 5:15 and 6:30 p.m., while the rest of the tryouts for the remaining Atom and Midget rep teams will start after the long weekend on September 6th.

True hockey action begins for the Pee Wee and Bantam Tier 2 and 3 teams the weekend of September 10th and 11th for the 3rd Annual Ice Breaker Tournament. Each team will be playing three games over the weekend.

Trudy Alexander, FSJMHA’s Registrar and Director of Hockey, says that the Association’s office will be tentatively open from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays throughout the rest of the month for parents that still need to register their kids. She added however that due to the tentative schedule, it is best to call the office at the Pomeroy Sports Centre prior to making the trip.
