RCMP and Coroner’s Service investigating fatal ATV crash near Chetwynd

CHETWYND, B.C. – The Chetwynd RCMP and the BC Coroners Service are continuing to investigate what could have caused a fatal ATV rollover in the Chetwynd area last Monday.

Shortly before 1:00 p.m. on August 15th, the Chetwynd RCMP responded to a single vehicle collision involving an off-road vehicle approximately 35 km south of Chetwynd on Highway 29.

A 59 year-old Chilliwack man was on a hunting trip with friends and missed his check-in time, causing a search to be initiated. The man was later located by members of the hunting team and found deceased under an overturned ATV. His name has not been released.

Upon arriving at the scene, investigators determined that the man had rolled backwards down a steep incline while negotiating a sharp turn on an ATV, which landed on top of the man.

The cause of the accident is currently still under investigation by police and the BC Corroner’s Office. The collision appears to be accidental and no foul play is suspected at this time. No further information is being released at this time.

If anyone has information about this incident, they are asked to the Chetwynd RCMP at (250) 788-9221 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
