FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Minister of Education has confirmed over 528,000 public school students are expected to be enrolled, when the new school year begins next week.

This is Mike Bernier.

This coming school year total government funding to school districts across the province will reach $5.1 billion and average per pupil funding is now estimated at more than $8,900.

That’s an increase of 42 per cent since the 2000-2001 school year.

Meantime, the District 60 Superintendent says, there are just too many economic variables in play this year, to safely make an accurate local area enrolment forecast.

This is Dave Sloan.

Mr. Sloan adds, because of the nature of some of the work which gets done in this area, families are not always able to return to the city in time for the opening of the school year.

Thus he says, it could be the end of the first week of classes, before the school district will be able to put forward an accurate enrolment figure.
