City hosting animal control bylaw consultation tonight

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The city of Fort St. John will be hosting a public consultation seminar on proposed changes to its animal control bylaws.

The city announced the proposed changes back on August 31st. The bylaw last saw changes twenty years ago, and the proposed changes include new or reworded regulations that the city says will make residents safer. City bylaw enforcement officers say that the majority of cases that they respond to are for dog interactions. In 2015, bylaw officers received 385 dog and animal complaints, impounded 98 dogs, dealt with 271 lost, injured or deceased animals, followed up on 121 dogs at large, and investigated 53 dog attacks.

The public meeting will be taking place at the Pomeroy Sports Centre starting at 6:00 p.m. this evening, where residents can voice their concerns. Residents can also provide feedback on the city’s website.

Council will review the updated bylaw, along with the public’s feedback, at its council meeting scheduled for October 11th.
