KAPALUA, H.I. – Fort St. John triathlete Tate Haugan was on the island of Maui this past weekend competing in the XTERRA World Championship triathlon in Kapalua.
Running, biking and swimming in the tropical climate where the Humidex made the 23 degrees feel more like 29, Haugan completed the triathlon yesterday in 4:03:41. His time of just over four hours was good enough to finish in 9th place in the 15-19 age group division.
Haugan swam the 1.5 kilometers in 23:23, biked the 32 kilometres across the West Maui Mountains in 2:35:45, and ran the 20 kilometres of the trail run in 1:04:33. His time was was less than a minute behind 8th place finisher Brendon Bergs from New Zealand, and only minutes behind 6th place in his division. Overall, Haugan placed 171st in the triathlon, out of a field of nearly 750 competitors.
