Justin Trudeau introduces federal carbon tax plan

OTTAWA – Justin Trudeau has introduced a new carbon tax plan.

In an article from the CBC, Trudeau has given provinces 2 years to come up with carbon pricing, or else the federal government will impose one themselves.

Trudeau said that provinces are allowed to have a cap-and-trade system or put a direct price on carbon pollution but it must meet the federal floor price.

If neither of those conditions is met, Trudeau and the Liberal government will then implement a price in that province.

Trudeau said the proposed price on carbon pollution should at least start at $10 a tonne in 2018, rising by $10 each year to $50 a tonne by 2022.

Provinces and territories that do go with a cap-and-trade system must lower emissions in line with both Canada’s target and with the reductions expected in provinces that choose a price-based system.
