Alwin Holland volleyball teams take top places in district tournament

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Senior Girls and Senior Boys volleyball teams from Alwin Holland Elementary both placed first at this past weekend’s district championship tournament.

Coached by Darren Platzer and Kathy MacDonald, the girls squad featured outstanding performances from: Grace Adam, Hailey Dutchak, Paige McPherson, Laura Ross, Hannah Magyar, Danika Haynes, Brooklyn McCoy, Alyssa Gray, Sara Bianchi, Denae Kitzul, and Kaiya Jackson during the season. The team went undefeated in regular league play during the past two months this season.

In the double knockout draw, the Alwin Holland girls defeated teams from Baldonnel, Taylor, and Robert Ogilvie Elementary Schools. In the final, the girls faced Taylor for the second time. The first match was a close game, but Alwin Holland got the win 25-23. Game two was still close, though not as close; Alwin Holland won 25-20 in two straight games.

The boys team of Finley Gibb, Mitchell McNiven, Matthew Mitchell, Ethan Semeniuk, Jordan Condon-Henyu, Logan Furber-Lennox, Zachary Brownlee, Reid Arberry, and Caden Brown also went undefeated in league play this fall.

Coached by Hunter Mackay, they knocked out the CM Finch, Christian Life, and Bert Ambrose teams in the double-elimination draw. It was another close first final game, this one pitting Holland against CM Finch for the second time. The score of Game 1 was 25-19. Holland won Game 2 by the score of 25-13 to be crowned district champs.
