FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Fort St. John figure skating club had an excellent showing in their first competition of the 2016/2017 season.

Nine of the club’s figure skaters were in Kamloops two weeks ago competing in the Autumn Leaves Competition, where a total of 102 skaters were competing. Jillian Stone, Emma Shipalesky, and Sophie Stevens all came first in their respective age group divisions. Haley Peterson and Addison Stone both placed 2nd in the Star 4U10 and Star 4 13+ divisions. Ashlyn Goertzen managed 6th spot in the Star 4 U13 division, where Samantha Jankins also placed 8th.

Among the more experienced skaters, Emma Stevens took 13th in the Star 6 division, and Kirstyn Beech placed 6th in the Gold Women’s category.

Figure Skating Club Coach Jennifer Hammond says that the competition is one of the biggest competitions of the year, and is a great opportunity for skaters in Northern BC to compete against those from the Lower Mainland. Though the competition is early in the season, Hammond says that many of the skaters have been practicing thoughout the summer months.

The club’s next competition isn’t until Regionals in January, when the club have five straight competitions between mid-January and mid-March.
