Fort St. John artist named regional winner of 14th annual BMO art competition

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – An artist originally from Fort St. John has been named as a regional winner of the 14th annual BMO 1st Art! Invitational Student Art Competition.

Fort St. John resident and First Nations University graduate Kristen Auger is this year’s regional winner from Saskatchewan for her submission, Nîpihikan Pimâtisiwin: Flower Life. The intricate piece is made of stroud cloth, seed beads, satin and velveteen, and is inspired by the Cree Hoods of the 1970s.

The competition of visual arts from students in post-secondary institutions across the country represents the best of Canada’s next generation of artists. Auger was selected alongside 11 other regional winners and national winner Nathan Levasseur from the University of Alberta. Auger’s piece was out of 248 entries that were submitted from across the country. The winning pieces can be viewed on BMO Financial Group’s website here.

In addition to having her piece displayed at the University of Toronto’s Justina M. Barnicke Gallery from November 17th to December 17th, Auger has also been awarded a $5,000 prize.
