UPDATE: Fort St. John Fire Chief Fred Burrows says that the fire department has confirmed that there was no gas leak.

Burrows said that the department received a report from someone that suspected the natural gas-like smell was caused by someone that dumped a petroleum product into a storm drain in the Fort St. John industrial park. He explained that is was entirely possible, if a petroleum product was dumped into the storm drain for the vapours to migrate through pipes uphill towards the downtown area.

Burrows said that confirmation from the Ministry of Environment should be received by the Fire Department this afternoon.
