SPRUCE GROVE, A.B. – Four of the Fort St. John Northern Strikers teams were in competition at the Spruce Grove Early Bird Premier Tournament this past weekend.
The U16 Boys had a tough go of it early on. The team hit the field for their first game at 11:30 Friday night after a long day of travel, which the lost to the FM Fury 6-1. The team played at a much more agreeable 9:30 p.m. on day two Saturday. The U16 Northern Strikers took on MUSC Barcelona in a close battle. MUSC ended up with a win over Fort St. John 5-4. The U16 Boys got their first win of the tournament on Sunday afternoon when they beat the SW Sting 7-3. After the division’s final game was played that afternoon, U16 Boys ended up winning the Silver medal due to the goals differential with other division teams.

The U14 Girls’ first game was a back and forth battle against the SE Storm. Julie Bonecamp scored a hat trick as the Northern Strikers won 5-4. Game #2 was a hard-fought win that saw three goals in the last 2:30 minutes, but the Girls held on for a 6-4 win. Game #3 was another close contest. The game was tied until the last 53 seconds when Julie Bonecamp scored on a breakaway to put the Strikers up 3-2 for the win. Game #4 was a 4-2 loss against SE Storm. In addition to Bonecamp, Isabella Ziebert, MyKenzie Beech, and Madison Holloway also scored goals for the team during the tournament. After their final loss, the U14 Girls had to wait for the final game in their division to be played, but ended up taking home the Gold after the points were tallied.
The U12 Boys are also bringing home some #1 hardware with their gold medals! Game #1 was a 3-2 win over FM Fury. Game #2 was a 6-1 win for the Northern Strikers over the Strikers. Though the team tied the SA Impact 2-2 in game #3, the points system worked in the team’s favour, and the team took home a second gold medal for the club.
The U14 Boys team ended up with a hard-earned Bronze Medal in their division. Game #1 was a 5-3 loss to Tri County. Game #2 was an amazing 10-1 win against the host Spruce Grove Saints. Game #3 was an unfortunate 4-2 loss to Battle River United.
