Cold weather warning continues for North Peace, extended to South Peace

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Environment Canada has continued the Cold Weather Warning in effect for the North Peace Region, and has also now issued a warning for the South Peace.

Cold Arctic air has settled over the BC Peace River region. The cold temperatures in combination with northerly winds will generate wind chills near minus 40. With no warming trend in sight, these wind chills are expected to persist at least into the end of the week.

Watch for cold related symptoms and complaints which include:

  • Shortness of breath, wheezing and cough.
  • Chest pain and arrhythmias.
  • Colour change of fingers and toes, pain, numbness and tickling sensation in extremities.
  • Pain, stiffness, swelling, restricted movement, or weakness of muscles.
  • Itching or pale skin.

If you experience these symptoms when exposed to the cold, move indoors and begin warming.

Always wear clothing appropriate for the weather. Synthetic and wool fabrics provide better insulation. Some synthetic fabrics are designed to keep perspiration away from your body which keep you dry and further reduce your risk. Dress in layers with a wind resistant outer layer. You can remove layers if you get too warm (before you start sweating) or add a layer if you get cold. Wear warm socks, gloves, a hat and scarf in cold weather. Be sure to cover your nose to protect it. If you get wet, change into dry clothing as soon as possible. You lose heat faster when you’re wet.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ec.tempetepacifique-pacificstorm.ec@canada.ca or tweet reports to #BCStorm.
