Flyers double up Valleyview Jets to close out 2016

VALLEYVIEW, A.B. – The Fort St. John Senior Flyers have broken their three game losing skid right before the Christmas holidays.

The Flyers were in Valleyview on Saturday night to take on the Jets, a team that got their first win in nearly 35 contests early last week.

Rick Cleaver got the Flyers on the board first less than seven minutes in on a feed from Adam Horst and Bryan Lewis. Valleyview answered back with a pair of goals in the ninth minute of the opening frame to take a brief 2-1 lead. Brennan Giroux tied things back up at 2 apiece with 7:09 left assisted by Robbie Sidhu. Jeff Shipton’s goal in the final two minutes of the opening act gave Fort St. John the lead once again, with Cleaver and Taylor Greatrex tallying assists on the go-ahead goal.

The Flyers took a two goal lead at the 16:34 mark. Cleaver scored his second of the game on a feed from Shipton to make it a 4-2 hockey match. Valleyview and Fort St. John would continue to trade goals back-and-forth throughout the stanza. Adam Horst and Brady Busche would both answer to goals by the Jets, before Sidhu made it 7-4 Flyers late in the frame on a feed from Giroux and Jake Ebner.

In the third, Cleaver got a hat-trick, Horst added his second, and Cole Calliou scored his first as the Flyers took a 10-4 lead. Though Valleyview would score with 49 seconds left, the Flyers doubled up the Jets 10-5 to end 2016 with a W.

The start 2017 on the road with games in Dawson Creek on January 3rd, and in Spirit River on January 5th. The Flyers return to the North Peace Arena on Saturday January 7th for a game against Grimshaw.
