FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Fort St. John Hospital Foundation has announced that it has created an endowment fund in honour of founding member Jean Gardner.

The Endowment Fund was announced by the Hospital Foundation on December 6th, to honour the significant role that Gardner played in the success of the Foundation, in health care, and in the community. Jean’s husband, Reg, made the $50,000 donation in memory of Jean, as well as daughter Dani, and parents Dorothy and Ken.

Jean served for eight years as the Director of Finance at the Fort St John General Hospital. She was also one of the founding members of the FSJ Hospital Foundation and served on the Board of Directors from 1994 until her retirement from the Board in 2006. Executive Director, Gord Klassen commented, “We are so pleased to receive this generous donation, and we celebrate the creation of this Endowment Fund in Jean’s name, as a tribute to a wonderful woman whose impact was felt by so many of us. Jean will be remembered as a thoughtful and caring person and through this Endowment Fund named in her honour, her impact on our community and her legacy of compassion, kindness, and generosity, will continue!”

Klassen went on to explain that, “Endowment Funds are very important to the Foundation, as they ensure a sustainable and secure source of future funding regardless of the economic climate. Essentially, donations to our Endowment Funds are invested in a secure investment, and the annual interest from that investment provides the Foundation with funds to purchase equipment for the Fort St. John Hospital and Peace Villa Residential Care Facility. This ensures that we are not only able to supply current equipment needs through our annual campaigns and fundraising efforts, but will continue to have an effective role in supporting our local hospital well into the future.”

In the fall of 2007, the Foundation’s Board of Directors developed policy that allowed individuals or businesses to create Named Endowment Funds for a minimum commitment of $50,000. Named Endowment Funds are permanent funds set up in the name of a person or business where, like a general endowment, the capital is never touched but the interest is either re-invested or used to support the mandate of the Foundation. The Foundation now has four Endowment Funds: General Endowment, Henry Petrie Endowment, Jean Gardner Endowment, and Energetic Services Endowment.
