Highways 1, 97, 99 closed between Lower Mainland and B.C. Interior

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — For motorists in the B.C. Interior trying to get to and from the Lower Mainland, wildfires in the Thompson and Cariboo regions have limited the number of route options.

A number of wildfires that erupted across the province on Friday have caused officials with the Ministry of Transportation to close highways in the areas around Williams Lake, Quesnel, 100 Mile House, Cache Creek, and Ashcroft. Highway 97 is effectively closed to traffic from Quesnel to Spencer Bridge, leaving Highways 16 and 5 as the only other land-based north-south route open to motorists in B.C. The only other way to get from Prince George to Vancouver by car is via BC Ferries from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island.

From Kamloops and the rest of the Southern Interior, only the Coquihalla and Crownest Highways currently allow direct travel from Kamloops to Hope, at the southern end of the Fraser Canyon. A Google Maps query for directions between Fort St. John and Vancouver reveals the fastest open alternate route:
