DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — One person was killed in a two-vehicle accident that closed the Hart Highway west of Dawson Creek on Saturday afternoon.
Sgt. Tim Paulmert with the RCMP’s South Peace Traffic Services said that officers got the call of a collision on Highway 97 at the Mason-Semple Road on Saturday, June 15th. According to a replay of the Ministry of Transportation’s highway webcam, the collision occurred some time between 4:20 and 4:22 p.m.
At the scene, Sgt. Paulmert said that officers discovered that a Nissan Pathfinder had been travelling southbound on the Mason Road, and collided with a tractor-trailer unit that was travelling eastbound on Highway 97. The Nissan struck the tractor-trailer on the driver’s side just behind the front wheel, rupturing the truck’s fuel tank, and causing the truck to roll onto its side across the highway.
Sgt. Paulmert said that the drivers of both vehicles were taken to hospital with minor injuries, while the passenger in the SUV was fatally injured and pronounced deceased at the scene. Their identities have not been released.
The Highway was closed for approximately eight and a half hours while police investigated, reopening shortly after 1:00 a.m. Sunday. While the cause of the collision has not yet been determined, Sgt. Paulmert added that police have not ruled out speed or alcohol as playing a role.
