Peace Region athletes off to National High School Finals Rodeo in Wyoming


FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A total of nine High School Rodeo competitors in the B.C. Peace Region left Fort St. John yesterday for their trip to the National High School Finals Rodeo on Sunday.

Fort St. John’s Derek Hadland along with brothers Wade and Tyrel Roberts left for the competition, which starts on July 14th. Other rodeo contestants include B.C.’s All Around Cowboy and Hudson’s Hope native Ben Jackson, All Around Cowgirl Kelsey Drinkall from Chetwynd, Fallyn Mils from Pink Mountain, Dawson Creek’s Tommi-Sue Little, Farmington native Kevin White, and Cali-Jaye Rohloff from Valleyview.

The group of nine also competed at the BC High School Rodeo Senior Provincials in Merritt just over a month ago, which is where Drinkall and Jackson were crowned B.C.’s all-around cowgirl and cowboy respectively. At provincials, brothers Wade and Tyrel Roberts finished 2nd in Team Roping, while Derek Hadland and Dexter Keith finished 3rd. Wade Roberts also finished 2nd behind Kevin White in Steer Wrestling at the competition, where Jackson finished 3rd. Jackson also bested Wade Roberts in Tie Down Roping at Provincials, the two finished in 2nd and 4th respectively.

The National High School Finals Rodeo takes place July 13th – 22nd in Gillette, Wyoming. For more information and streaming of the competition, visit https://www.nhsra.com.
