UPDATE – The highway is open in both directions.

UPDATE as of 9:45 p.m. – The highway could re-open by 12 a.m. mountain time. The next update is expected at 11 p.m. Watch www.drivebc.ca for updates.

UPDATE: Cpl. Madonna Saunderson said that at least one person has died in the crash on Highway 97 south of Chetwynd. The crash happened just after 2:00 p.m. Thursday near the former Silver Sands Lodge.

Community Interviews with Moose FM

Cpl. Saunderson said that two vehicles were involved in the collision and that the occupants of one of the vehicles were uninjured. At this point, it is not known what caused the crash or when the highway will reopen.

CHETWYND, B.C. – Highway 97 is closed in both directions between Chetwynd and Mackenzie.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, the Highway is closed 70km south of Chetwynd.  As of 3:10 p.m., crews were en route to the collision, so details about the collision are limited at this time

There is no estimate on when the highway will be open.
