Local resident, Amelia Neil is passionate about her role as a foster parent as she has done so for the past five years and during this time she has loved and cared for 26 children.

She shares with me that this was something she wanted to do as a child, Neil says “I started the application process when I was 3 months pregnant with my first child, we had our first placement by the time she was 6 months old.”

Neil goes on to share her favourite part of fostering “Is watching families heal and reunite. I enjoying being part of the transition.” She goes on to say, “I also like learning from more experienced foster parents. We have a monthly meeting and encourage each other. I get to glean from their wisdom and experiences as well as sometimes it’s nice to hear your not alone and the struggles I face may be similar to a struggle someone else has.”

“I wish fostering wasn’t necessary, but I think it’s important to be part of a community that uplifts and helps others when they are struggling,” said Neil, “Sometimes people assume we are foster parents because we are some sort of extraordinary parent skill which I can guarantee isn’t true, I feel like we are just willing to try.”

“Now that we are a part of the system we see the huge need and couldn’t possibly stop,” said Neil.
